In keeping with the rationale used by 16 states  proposing a requirement for pre-abortion counseling and transvaginal ultrasound, I would like to add a requirement for pre-surgical counseling and penile ultrasound for patients requesting vasectomies and/or prescriptions for testosterone replacement therapy, Viagra or similar medications, to be paid for in full by health insurers.

Counseling would include but not be limited to lengthy and graphic discussion of the ramifications of unprotected sex, including the moral, legal and financial aspects of pregnancy and subsequent parental obligations; a course on sexually-transmitted diseases, including photos of symptoms of AIDS and other STDs, and detailed instructions on prevention measures; a detailed study of state and federal laws regarding rape, prostitution, child pornography, child rape and statutory rape; plus, mental health services for patients who have experienced any form of sexual abuse or have participated in abuse. 

We can't be too cautious when it comes to protecting the family jewels.

I should think the pope and bishops also would favor a requirement that men within or entering the priesthood be castrated. That would solve most if not all of the child abuse problems before they arise, save piles of future money damages, and keep the priests' minds on their religious duties and on the job rather than in transit between parishes becauses of abuse claims. Can't mandate what the catholic churches do, of course, but perhaps that can be made a condition that must exist before any of these new "women-should- be-barefoot-pregnant-and-in-the-kitchen" laws become effective.

I should tell you that penile ultrasound is sometimes used to diagnose erectile dysfunction. From what I've read, it's not as onerous as it sounds. Except for the counseling part, the rest of the proposed "requirements" are nothing more than a good sex education class. Everybody should have some knowledge about the law in regards to sexual activity and responsibilities. I wrote this in jest, but could also argue it as something worth considering.
I just hope it scares the living Bejesus out of any men who read it, just like the thought of a transvaginal ultrasound makes women want to puke. Fair is fair.

There is a sexual practice of inserting rods in a penis, called 'sounding', a case of fetishization of a medical practice:

My own expecience with cystoposcopy is that I found it to be preferable to a root canal, but not by much.

Mandating a medically unnecessary procedure is bad enough: that it is a physical probe of the private parts for a purely political end, and it's clear intent as a hurdle for abortion shows it to be abuse of the law to establish a politically correct ideology.
I will say that some profoundly conservative folks I know are shocked by this sort of law, and have said they'll vote accordingly.

Thanks Bill and Larry, for the male perspective on this issue. I'm glad you mentioned that the proposed probe was medically unnecessary, as well as invasive. And, Bill, it cheers me to hear that there still are conservatives who can see the duplicity in this kind of legislation. I had begun to think they believed only in "hands off" for certain aspects of life, like taxes,guns and property. They seem to have no problem with imposing their beliefs on everyone else. When liberals do the same, the result is generally an increase in opportunities for individuals, not the loss of options. Nobody says you have to have an abortion. Nobody says you must use contraception. Why can't we leave it at that and let patients and doctors do their thing?
