Loved the idea of using old encyclopedias for bookshelves. Now, can anyone figure out what to do with old National Geographics?

Great point, kathy! I guess you could stack and glue them into building blocks to replace concrete blocks for wood-shelf supports. And, yellow IS a trendy color.
I understand NatGeo is a popular subscription on e-readers, so the problem you point out might not last very long.
