If you’re old enough to remember, you’ll be able to answer that question. Nothing rocked our generation more than the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963.

Click here for a look back at a series of posts, published in 2009, that include interviews with people on or near the scene, and some just going about their day when it happened.

It was the first year of my five years teaching. Tom was in his last year of law school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I was distracted and not really as engaged as usual with my class of 27 9th grade boys. It was the last period of the day and I was eager for the school day to be over. Tom and I were planning to go to his home in Wilkes County where a lovely birthday dinner and celebration was planned for me.

The announcement came over the intercom from the principal. School was dismissed early. My birthday celebration did not happen that year as we sat in front of the television with Tom's family crying as we watched the events unfold.

Each year on my birthday we remember all over again.

Judy T,
Thanks so much for sharing your memory of that awful day and week. I find it hard to get through Thanksgiving without remembering it, and you have it even worse. All these years later, it's still good to share these memories together, since they were so important to each and every one of us. These are the ties that bind, even strangers. We ALL were there, one way or another.
